The “maskne” skincare routine.

Just when we thought we knew all there was to know about acne, “maskne” comes along. A new term for acne and irritation caused by wearing a mask, maskne is… so 2020. Now, let us be clear, we encourage everyone to wear a mask to help curb the spread of COVID-19, but we want you to take care of your skin too! Whether you’re a frontline worker wearing a mask daily, or you’re wearing a non-medical mask to safely run your errands, if you’ve noticed acne breakouts on the areas covered by your mask, you’re not alone. We’re all adjusting to this “new normal”, and so is your skin!

What causes maskne?

When you wear a mask over your nose and mouth, moisture, sweat, and bacteria can become trapped, leading to a build-up of oil and secretions on the skin. When you combine this build-up with the friction and pressure caused by the mask, the result is irritation, inflammation, and acne breakouts.

How can I avoid maskne?

First, if you have a choice, a mask made from 100 percent cotton will help your skin breathe. We also recommend always wearing a clean face mask, so try to have a couple on hand to rotate and wash daily using a detergent or soap product for sensitive skin, which will not contain fragrance or other ingredients that could cause irritation. If you throw your masks in the dryer, do not use fabric softener or sheets, as they decrease the cloth masks ability to absorb moisture. If at all possible, avoid wearing makeup under your mask to minimize the chance of clogged pores and irritation.

What products can help maskne sufferers?

To combat maskne, you want to keep your skin clean and well hydrated. Wash your face using a gentle cleanser and apply a light moisturizer. When maskne does pop up, adding product(s) that contain salicylic acid can help, since this ingredient interacts with water and oil, and (when formulated properly) helps reduce breakouts without causing dryness or irritation.
