Trouble with pigment? 3 easy steps for tackling all types of brown spots

Wonder Skincare customers already know skincare is not to be underestimated; the habits we prioritize, and the skincare steps we take every day, add up to real gains. Importantly, to understand how to effectively tackle pigment with your at-home routine, you must first understand pigment function, and how it’s made.

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation—what we see as brown spots on the surface of the skin—is actually created deep in the dermis by specialized cells called melanocytes. These cells are triggered by all sorts of inflammation causing aggressors in our internal and external environments, especially unprotected sun exposure.

Tackle pigment with your at-home skincare routine.

To effectively tackle pigment, you must first sequester its root cause and suppress the formation of new pigment. This is where we look for ingredients like Tranexamic Acid & Niacinamide—found in products like ZO® Skin Health Brightalive® and SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense—which calm the activity of melanocytes and support skin brightening.

Next, we have to contend with existing pigment, or melanin, in the skin. Contrary to how it appears on the surface, pigment is less organized beneath the skin’s surface and only forms spots as it reaches the surface. An exfoliant like retinol will support the natural exfoliation process and help fade brown spots over long term use.

Lastly, we want to protect the skin from further inflammatory damage, and one of the best understood ways to do this for the skin, is with daily sun protection. UVA, radiation from the sun responsible for the telltale, extrinsic signs of aging—like wrinkles and precancerous spots—is present 365 days per year in our climate. SPF needs to be your BFF!

A customized routine, with product selections for your unique skin, can make meaningful improvements to pigment and complexion in as little as 8-12 weeks, with greater ongoing benefits through consistent long term use.
